October is breast cancer awareness month. Every year I think it is important to raise awareness about breast cancer and the affects that it has for women. It is vital to get checked yearly and be aware of your body. Breast cancer affects so many people. A loved one, friend or yourself could be affected by it.
The #SewPink Initiative was created by ByAnnie.com LLC to raise awareness for breast cancer throughout the year. Efforts culminate in an annual blog hop during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month to promote self-care, awareness, early detection and support for those affected by breast cancer.

My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple years ago. She had to have a lumpectomy as well as chemotherapy and radiation. It was a long journey for her. It came with physical pain and emotional stress during that time. Today, she is cancer free but must still take medication to help prevent the cancer from coming back. She continues to worry that someday it may come back and my hope is that she will be free from cancer from here on out.
She found out that she had cancer by getting her yearly mammogram screening. It was immensely important in identifying the cancer and determining further treatments. I am so happy that she is healthy today and lucky that she is here with us. Unfortunately, others have fought this battle and lost. May those that have lost a loved one find comfort in the memories that they shared. Others continue to fight their battle with cancer and my thoughts and care are with them during this difficult time.
Each year By Annie brings together creatives to join in on October's breast cancer awareness month. In doing so, we make something to share. When I was asked to participate again, I was thrilled because this cause is very near and dear to my heart.
I chose to make several By Annie's bag patterns. Benartex fabrics LLC sponsored the lovely fabrics I selected for each of the bags I made. I made the Clam Up zippered pouch, the In Control organizer and three Project Bags. I used fabrics with shades of pink and teal to keep with the SewPink theme and purple since that is my sister's favorite color.
Sewing always makes me happy and when doing it, my worries melt away. It is a great way to forget about something difficult going on in your life. While my sister was going through treatment, I made her a quilt and a bag so that I could hopefully cheer her up. I continue to make things today and donate them so that maybe someone else will find a bit a joy during a trying time.
Thank you for following along in my sewing journey and check out the other creative sewists who joined in on this blog hop.
